Pure Barre

For the past couple weeks I have had the pleasure of taking some Pure Barre classes. There are only four locations in Kentucky, and one is right down the road in Ft. Wright!! It’s a super low impact workout, so it is great for people with arthritis, or people who don’t like jumping or running. Low impact, yes. But don’t think that means easy! Pure Barre classes are physically challenging to be sure! I have yet to be able to get through the workout without having to take a little break here and there. But each time I try to push myself a little more and I can already notice that I am stronger. I walk out of there (sometimes wanting to crawl out of there) dripping in sweat and feeling great!

Pure Barre was founded by dancer, choreographer and fitness guru, Carrie Rezabek Dorr. Carrie opened her first studio in the basement of an office building in Birmingham, MI in 2001. With no initial clients, staff, signage or even a bathroom, Carrie has grown Pure Barre in to the company it is today.

I am fairly fit, I like to workout, I can lunge and squat. So I thought this class might be hard but nothing I can’t handle. During my first class, I was kindly positioned next to one of the regulars so I could watch her if I needed to. She was 60 years old, sweet as can be and teenie (not skinny teenie, strong and fit teenie!). This just reinforced my perception that I was going to not only finish this class, but I was going to rock it! About 10 minutes in the sweat was beading down my face and my legs were burning, I looked over to my “example” as she effortlessly moved through each motion! WOW! She was awesome and so strong! Later she told me that she started coming to gain strength…and believe me she did!

Here is a little Q and A with the owners, Kelly and Lori, of Pure Barre Ft. Wright!

How did you get started with Pure Barre?
Kelly had been a client at the Pure Barre in Lexington, Ky for about 5 years and loved this workout! Because she saw what it had done for her body and mind she decided to look into opening her own! She wanted to look in Northern Ky as an option but didn’t know anyone there. Kelly and I have a mutual friend that gave her my name and the timing could have not been more perfect! We meant briefly and trusted the advise of our mutual friend that we would be a good match. About a month later we had applied for the franchise and were on our way to Denver for our interview and audition. Pure Barre corporate emailed us within a few days after leaving Denver to let us know we got it!! All I can say is that I have made a great new best friend and I have never loved a job more!

How long has this location been open?

We have been open since September 10th, 2011

How many classes did you start with and how many do you have now?
We started with 32 classes, and we have increased to 39 as of today.

How is Pure Barre different than other fitness classes?
Pure Barre is the fastest , most effective way to change your body. This form of exercise uses isometric movements using a ballet barre, set to motivational music. This technique promises to burn fat in record breaking time, while lifting your seat and toning your abs, thighs and arms. After each intense section of class you finish with a stretch. This creates a long, lean muscle, like that of a dancer’s body. This technique does not use any high impact moves making it more attainable for anyone who may have knee or joint issues.Pure Barre works, because you get results!

I noticed that there are no guys in class. Is Pure Barre designed to target problem zones in women?
Pure Barre is not only for women. We do have men that do classes, but, this technique was developed to help women target their most stubborn areas of their body; back of the arms, abs, thighs, and seat.

What if I am really out of shape? Do you have Pure Barre classes for beginners?
Any new client can take any Pb class. The great thing about what we do, is that any position can be modified to accommodate beginners or someone with an injury who has not taken before. We know that it can sometimes be intimidating coming to a new place, but we assure all our clients will feel welcome because of the one on one attention we strive to attain everyday at our Ft. Wright Pure Barre.

How long does it take for me to notice a difference in my strength and muscle tone?
You should notice a difference in your body after taking about 10 classes. Of course this means coming about 3 to 4 times a week if possible. I like to tell my clients that pb definitely works, but they have to be willing to put in the effort. There is a reason why its is called “working” out.

If you’re fitness routine includes running 6 miles every morning followed by an hour of weight training, Pure Barre is a perfect fit for you! And if you’re current fitness routine involves little more than chasing kids around or getting all the housework done in one day flat, Pure Barre is a perfect fit for you too!

Pure Barre classes are designed to be appropriately challenging at every fitness level! Make sure you read the word “challenging” in that last sentence. Change isn’t easy, but it is good! You will be encouraged to push your body past what you thought possible, resulting in stronger and leaner muscles.

There is quite a gambit of different fitness movements out there, some safe and others not so much! Pure Barre, because of the low impact on the joints, focus on small controlled movements and knowledgeable instructors, you can rest assured that your are doing your body good!

If you are looking for a great way to jump start your summer take a Pure Barre class, the first class is FREE!! Bonus! And they have tons of different packages and promotions, one for every budget! 🙂

First go here to see all the different class times! You will also be able to register for the class you would like to attend. I highly recommend registering online, the classes fill up fast and you will want to hold your spot!

So you’re ready for your first class, you registered online and you’re ready to go. Wear comfy clothes and don’t worry about cleaning the grass stains off your gym shoes, all you need is a clean pair of matching socks…or just matching socks…or just socks. If you can’t seem to find two socks because your three year old uses them to transport his matchbox cars, and you only have two minutes before class starts and you are changing a blowout diaper while scanning the room for your misplaced car keys 🙂 …you can always buy a pair of Pure Barre socks once you get there! 🙂 Then not only will your socks match each other, but you will match everyone else and look super cool!

Plus if you want a buddy to go with, let me know, I would love to go with you! 🙂
