Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

I would like to introduce you all to Burgundy! We met at small group and became instant friends! She loves all things theater and music and Disney, so I thought it fitting that she become our “Arts and Entertainment” contributor! Welcome Burgundy and her first review! Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night!

The fantastic cast!

The fantastic cast!

In the wake of a shipwreck, Lady Viola (Maggie Lou Rader) washes up on the shores of Ilyria, penniless and alone. Disguising herself as a boy, she procures employment delivering love letters from the amorous Duke Orsino (Brent Vimtrup) to the object of his infatuation, the aloof Lady Olivia (Corinne Mohlenhoff). Things get sticky when Viola herself falls for the lovesick Duke, then stickier still when Lady Olivia falls for the disguised Viola. Add into the mix a drunken uncle, a prudish steward and a wise-cracking fool, and you’ve got a knot only time can untangle. Audiences will enjoy a traditional Elizabethan staging of this classic Shakespearean gender-bender, “Twelfth Night”

This past Friday night, was the opening night for the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s production of the Twelfth Night.  Although it was frigid outside, the crowd was warm and exciteful inside.  The cast was interactive with the audience from the beginning and the small theater atmosphere was so personable.  The first half of the play is full of drinking, singing, laughter and love.
There is a 15 minute intermission; which snacks and drinks (adult beverages included) can be purchased (cash only) and brought into the theater.  In fact, it is encouraged, since the second half of the play starts off with a crowd “drink off”!  The second half continues full of laughter, deceit, drinking and love.  The cast is fantastic and Malvolio is a hidden gem.
This was a fantastic experience, especially since I have never seen Shakespeare in theater.  Tickets are going fast and I encourage you to pre-order!  May you find this company and play  full of life, laughter and wit!
