Be wowed once more by an oldie but a goodie in the production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” playing at the Aronoff September 27 to October 9! 2016. The sets are terrific and the music and story as timeless as ever. Kerstin Anderson’s Maria is exceptional. She plays the role with just enough young energetic spirited youth and just enough wisdom, plus her vocals are lovely. Ben Davis as Captain Von Trapp demonstrates that military stiffness that begins to melt as he falls in love. The children in the cast are cute as buttons, and Paige Sylvester as Liesl embodies that teen longing to be grown up. Melody Betts gives a stunning performance as the Mother Abbess. Her performance of “Climb Every Mountain” raises the roof – What a powerful voice!
Scenery changes are seamless and clever. The mountains in the background are spectacular; and the scenes involving religious art are solemn and striking. You’ll be humming the unforgettable score; reminded once more of what made the Sound of Music one of the best musicals of all time.
The Sound of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013 (seen by over 44 million people); 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
