I ran out of whole wheat bread the other day and didn’t really feel like hauling three kids in the pouring rain to the store for one loaf of whole wheat bread…so we made our own! And I have to say…DELICIOUS! I may never buy sandwich bread again. It. is. so. yummy!
I used this recipe that I found on the blog Two Spoons.
Whole wheat sandwich bread, for those who need some flexibility in their lives
makes one 9×4 loaf (use this size of loaf tin)
1/2c hot water (just boiled)
1c WHOLE milk or [3/4c water + 1/4c cream] or [3/4c water + 50g (1/4c) melted butter]
3/4 Tbspn yeast
1 tsp rock sea salt or 1/2 tsp granulated salt
1/4 c sugar or honey or golden syrup
2 1/2 Tbs oil
3 1/3 c flour (any combination of whole wheat, either 100%, or 50% white, 50% wholemeal)
optional: a handful of seeds (eg. pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, poppy) and oats
I added all the ingredients in my lovely stand up mixer. Stirred it a bit with a spoon to incororpate all the ingredients. Then, with the dough hook attached I turned it one for 5 min or so, usually however long it takes me to clean up! Then I form the dough into a ball and cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise for 2 hours.
After that, I oiled up a bread pan, punched the dough down and shaped it into the bread pan. Covered that for another hour, then baked it at 350 for 40 min.
The house smells so sweet and the bread tastes so good! Win-win…and I saved money…Win-win-win…and it’s healthy…win-win-win-win!! So many wins!! You really can’t go wrong!

If you don’t have a stand up mixer…I am so sorry! Ask for one for your birthday, or Christmas, or just go get one! They are awesome and I love mine..I may or may not have cried when I opened mine (it was a surprise Christmas gift!)
