Cases Of Adult Bedwetting?

0

Wetting the bed as an adult is an incredibly difficult thing to talk about. It is something that we fully expect to only happen to children and the elderly or infirm, and it can be distressing to suddenly wake up having wet the bed as an adult. There could be many different reasons why you are suffering from sleep enuresis though, so there is no need to be ashamed. If you are suffering with adult bedwetting to a severe degree or you just want that peace of mind to have a good night’s sleep, there are also plenty of urinary products and incontinence solutions to look into, such as incontinence bed sheets.

Bedwetting in adults is different to how children wet the bed though, and it is important to understand this. Nocturnal enuresis is an involuntary action and not your fault. If there is a physical impediment or a neurological disconnect then you might find that some urine is released at night when it shouldn’t be.

Causes of adult bedwetting

There could be a number of reasons why you are suffering from adult bedwetting:

Family history and genes – For some people it is purely down to genetics, as you find with many different medical issues. If one or both of your parents suffered from bedwetting as an adult there is a big chance that you too will suffer. Speak to your family if you are beginning to experience incontinence at night and see if there is a history you need to be aware of.

Hormone problems – If there is an imbalance with your hormones, specifically the antidiuretic hormone that signals to the kidneys to decrease the amount of urine production, you might suffer from incontinence at night. In some cases, the kidneys do not respond to this signal and there is excessive build-up of urine at night.

Overactive bladder – Your bladder muscles are an important part of incontinence and if they are overactive, it can cause nocturnal enuresis. There are some irritants that can exacerbate an overactive bladder, such as caffeine, with cases of alcohol consumption causing adult bedwetting too.

Small bladder – In some cases it is as simple as having a small bladder, where the functional bladder capacity is smaller than it should be and the amount of urine that the bladder can hold is quite small.

UTIs – An infection in the urinary tract can sometimes be the cause of incontinence and should be looked at by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Medication and other health issues – Health issues, long-term illness or injury, surgeries and treatments can all have an impact on your bladder and cause incontinence.

What can I do about adult bedwetting?

There are some options open to you when thinking about treatment for incontinence and adult bedwetting in particular. Talk to your doctor first about the causes behind the symptoms you are experiencing and they will have the experience and knowledge to offer you advice on any potential treatment plans, ways in which you can manage your condition and what type of incontinence products will help the situation, whether that is incontinence bed sheets or incontinence pants and the like. There isn’t always a straight answer or a journey ahead of you when suffering from adult bedwetting but by speaking to a medical professional and finding a supplier of incontinence products you have the support that you need.
