A dental crown can be understood as a cap that is put on a damaged tooth to save it from further wear. Whether you have teeth that are broken or decayed, you can use these crowns to restore that tooth. The crown fits the entire tooth and fits snuggly.

The dentist may also need to remove some amount of enamel in order to make the new crown fit properly. There are a variety of materials that are used to make crowns, such as porcelain, metals, resin, etc.

If you want to make your teeth look good, you can consult your dentist and get to know if dental crowns are best for you or if some other treatment method would be better for you. Some people may need dental crowns to make their teeth more robust than they are.

Furthermore, a cracked tooth also needs to be supported and protected from any further wear or tear, and dental crowns can offer that protection. A good dentist can help you get the proper dental crowns Honolulu HI

What are the different scenarios where you might need dental crowns?

There can be several instances where you may need dental crowns; we will look at them one by one:

  • To restore a tooth that is broken or worn down.
  • A dental bridge needs to be held in place.
  • If a tooth is discolored or has stains that are severe, a dental crown can fix it.
  • A dental implant can be covered with it, too.
  • Provide cover for root canal-treated teeth.

What are the different types of dental crowns used?

There are various types that are used, and we will discuss some of them briefly here:

  • Pressed ceramic crowns:

The inner core is hard when it comes to pressed ceramic dental crowns. Furthermore, the inner core is made of ceramic and not metal, as you may see with Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns. In order to make the inner core, ceramic is melted at a high temperature.

Then, different layers of porcelain are added. Furthermore, the drawbacks of pressed ceramic crowns are pretty much the same as PFM crowns. The layers that are there can chip away over a period of time.

  • Same-day dental crowns:

CAD/CAM is used to make dental crowns while you are waiting for them to be prepared. Such technology lets you take the impression of your teeth, and then a custom dental crown can be made.

Once the dentist is done preparing your dental crown, the images will be sent to the milling machine. Then, the machine will help create a new crown using a block of ceramic.

  • All-ceramic crowns:

As compared to other types of crowns, all-ceramic allows it to mimic the tooth enamel more than any other type of crown. In case you have mental allergies, you can fight them by making the right choice. Different materials are used to make ceramic dental crowns. Zirconium dioxide is seen as the most popular one among them.

What is the procedure for getting a dental crown?

There is usually a need for two dental visits to get dental crowns; let us look at them:

First dental visit:

  • The tooth is prepared, and some enamel is taken out. It helps in making some space for the new crown to fit in.
  • Then, impressions will be taken for the new dental crown. Digital impressions can be taken in order to have a better picture.
  • Dental crowns take 2-3 weeks to prepare, but a person can wear a temporary dental crown.

Second visit:

  • A temporary crown is removed.
  • Everything is rechecked, including the size, color, and shape of the crown.
  • Dental cement is used to bond the dental crown properly.
