Tips to Treat Mouth Sores (Canker sores)

A mouth sore is also called a canker sore which is a small ulcer on the inside of the mouth. This ulcer may be grey or white with red edges. These sores usually develop on the soft parts of the mouth and can either appear alone or in the form of clusters. 

Mouth sores are not contagious and may heal within 7-10 days but with proper treatment, one can be healed within a week.

Here are a few suggestions on how you can treat a mouth sore.

1. Using an OTC gel or patch

You can apply an OTC (over the counter) ointment directly on the sore. These ointments are in the form of a gel or paste. Read more on how you can get these ointments and medicines. 

You can also place bandages and patches on the ulcers made specifically for mouth sores. These patches stick to the sore and prevent further irritation and pain. 

2. Using a mouth rinse

Rinsing the mouth with a medical rinse can help prevent further pain in the sore. It also helps provide relief. Choose a mouth rinse with antiseptic qualities so that it stops painful sensations in the mouth.

3. Practicing dental hygiene with a soft brush

Maintaining dental hygiene is a good way to avoid and treat sores. Regular brushing and flossing help prevent mouth sores and dental problems. Use a soft toothbrush and keep your teeth and gums clean. Brush twice a day especially after meals so bacteria doesn’t remain in your mouth. 

4. Taking vitamin B-12 supplements

Taking vitamins supplements keep the body requirements of vitamins in check so the body organs function better. Vitamin B-12 is an important vitamin that plays an important role in developing red blood cells. Taking vitamin B-12 supplements have also been shown to reduce the development of mouth sores. 

5. Drinking chamomile tea with honey

You can use chamomile as a remedy to counter mouth sores. Brew a strong chamomile tea and use it to rinse the mouth after cooling. You can also soak a chamomile tea bag in warm water and apply the tea bag directly to the sore.

6. Avoiding certain foods

A good idea would be to avoid eating very salty, spicy,  or acidic foods. Such foods may irritate the sore further and cause pain. Hot drinks and beverages are also not recommended instead drink liquids with cooling agents such as menthol to soothe the affected area.
