The array of health supplements available in the market are endless. Many health companies are competing to make the best supplements that suit all ages and health concerns. In the past, we probably saw supplements in classic tablet, pill or powder form but with advanced technology nowadays, chewable gummy and jelly are gaining popularity among consumers especially for children. In this article, we will be focusing on one supplement, specifically folic acid and lysine orange tablets and its effects.

It is not new that supplements contain more than just one type of nutrient as its active ingredient. Like multivitamin supplements, this tablet has two active ingredients which are folic acid and lysine. We may hear a lot about folic acid but not much with lysine. Lysine is an amino acid that helps build the protein in the body. This is in contrast with folic acid as folic acid belongs to the vitamin group, specifically vitamin B.  Even the best source of food is different for these two. Folic acid mainly comes from plants like vegetables such as spinach, asparagus and brussels sprouts. In contrast to lysine, lysine is best sourced from animal products such as meat, fish, chicken and eggs. However, this does not eliminate the possibility that folic acid can come from animals and lysine can be obtained from plant-based products.

To have a better understanding of this orange tablet, it would be easier to know the effect according to its individual nutrient.

1-  Folic acid– One of the most significant effects of folic acid is in formation of red blood cells. Lack of folic acid may cause a person to become anaemic due to the low count of red blood cells. An anaemic person can easily get fatigue and frequent episodes of headaches. Another effect of folic acid is the possibility of lowering risk of cancer by being a protective agent especially towards pancreatic, esophageal and colorectal cancer. Folic acid also helps to prevent someone from getting heart disease by lowering the homocysteine that is linked to higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Folic acid is known to help with improvement of depressive symptoms in people undergoing antidepressant treatment. In pregnant women, folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects in babies and reduce risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children.

2-  Lysine– Studies found that lysine helps to build strong bone and teeth by facilitating calcium absorption in the body which then be used for the strong bone and teeth structure. Lysine, just as folic acid, helps to prevent heart diseases. It helps to lower blood pressure by preventing fat plaque from forming and deposited in the blood vessels. Since hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the factors that precipitate into heart diseases, having an optimal blood pressure helps to provide a protective factor against the debilitating cardiovascular diseases. Apart from hypertension, cholesterol plays a big role in the progress of heart disease. Hence, lysine can also lower the blood cholesterol by turning it into energy. Energy is produced by converting fatty acids such as in cholesterol through production of carnitine by lysine. You can gain more energy and less easily face tiredness in your everyday life. Muscle damages coming from physical activity can heal much faster with presence of taurine. Emotional distress can be managed well as lysine stabilises a person’s mood from becoming too engrossed with anxiety or stress.

Since there are many benefits offered from the effect of this tablet, there is no reason to not take this as supplements as it can greatly improve your health physically and mentally. Plus, it is in orange flavour and chewable which picky eaters may actually want it too.
